Tanamachi<\/p>\n<h4>ABSTRACT<\/h4>\n<p>The primary objective of this research is to characterize distinct differential reflectivity (<em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub>) column behavior with respect to height, intensity, and aerial coverage before tornadogenesis (failure) in X-band radar observations of supercells. \u00a0<em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> observations of three supercells observed at high spatiotemporal resolution with X-band polarimetric radar, two tornadic and one nontornadic, are examined. \u00a0Similar <em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> column behavior is found in all three, despite differing outcomes with respect to tornadogenesis. \u00a0<em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> columns are also generated from a 30-member ensemble of simulated supercells.\u00a0 Height, intensity and areal extent of the simulated <em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> columns are investigated just above the 0\u00b0C level. \u00a0Simulated <em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> column area and height both increase and <em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> intensity inside the column was higher, on average, in the 5 min before tornadogenesis, whereas there was no appreciable change in these metrics for tornadogenesis failure. \u00a0This result contrasts with our observational analysis, where there were no consistent, distinguishable changes in <em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> column metrics before tornadogenesis versus failure. \u00a0This research pinpoints <em>Z<\/em><sub>DR<\/sub> column metrics that can be foci of future study, both through field observations and numerical simulations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Full Text<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.55599\/ejssm.v21i3.102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDF<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/ejssm.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/herriott-tanamachi-2026-galley-ee.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Local<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Citation<\/strong>:\u00a0 Herriott, J.
